NINA REIN invites artist Alicia Henry to a democratic art act
November 13, 2020. Despite rising Covid cases, Alicia Henry's urban art act "LOVE.EATS.FEAR" is going into a second round - in front of NINA REIN's pop-up store on Herzogstrasse between 2 and 5 p.m.
In 2019, Henry carried out her gentle, socio-political art act "500 Love Letters to Society" at various locations in and around Munich. This year, the action is gaining even more significance.
The starting point of the art action is the thesis: As individuals, each of us is the smallest part of our society. What defines us as a whole depends on every single decision.
What would our world be like if every decision, no matter how small, was made out of love instead of fear? An impulse for self-reflection as the foundation for decisions based on a healthy self.
In this spirit, the artist is again writing short love letters to “everyone” this year – as a democratic act and a sign that art finds its way even in times of crisis. As a reminder that every single decision, no matter how small, is valuable.
"This is the only way we can have an influence," says the artist, "even if the world situation seems to suggest the opposite. I am on the same level as the people who pass by or come to me. I select a letter that has already been typed and seems appropriate, or I type one spontaneously. It is less about a consumer attitude, about simply taking something as you pass by, but about interaction, the conscious perception of the other person, the brief pause in the moment. The recipient is free to pass on the message. This means that the letter remains "on the move" as an "art object."
It is the type of interaction that makes the project so special this autumn. Is it even possible to consciously perceive the other person given the current Covid rules and the general mood?
The prerequisite is that it stays dry. If the number of Covid cases continues to explode, then we'll use a glass wall or a modified concept. Safety comes first in any case. With distance, masks, gloves and outdoors, the action otherwise remains what it is, but is all the more necessary, says the artist.
"What we need most right now is solidarity and, above all, trust - in us and our decisions - for the benefit of everyone. Even if it is extremely difficult for us at the moment." This is precisely why the unconventional merger with NINA REIN Fashion is a great fit. Julia Ickert, founder of NINA REIN, is enthusiastic:
"Applied and fine art complement and strengthen each other, both in terms of content and form. That's great. We achieve much more when we work together. This is exactly the right sign right now!"
